After diagnosed with a classical iron deficiency, the patient from Iron Deficiency Case received oral iron supplementation therapy. Due to the newly produced normocytic RBC’s the RBC histogram became bimodal (Case A) and the RDW increased from 12.8% to 28.8%. After 3 weeks of therapy patient still had anemia but it is clear that she responded well to iron therapy.
After 5 weeks of therapy (Case B) the bimodal RBC histogram was even more distinct indicating that it is only a matter of time before all RBC’s will be normocytic again.
