This patient had lymphocytosis, accompanied by a VAR LYM flag. In the WBC Differential plot the lymphocytes and monocytes seemed to form a single coherent population. The SIZE/ COMPLEXITY and the 90º/WBC 0º scatterplot demonstrated that part of the lymphocytes were classified as monocytes. It were actually the larger lymphocytes that were considered as monocytes, fully in agreement with the morphological observation of atypical, monocytoid lymphocytes.
This combination of findings is highly characteristic of Infectious Mononucleosis, a diagnosis that was confirmed in this patient with serological testing.
